SyncML Version 1.0 Alpha Specifications Available to Supporters August 29, 2000

SyncML, the initiative sponsored by mobile technology industry leaders Ericsson, IBM, Lotus, Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia, Psion, Palm, Inc. and Starfish Software, today provided further evidence that the world is one step closer to universal data synchronization of remote data and personal information across multiple networks, platforms and devices. SyncML Version 1.0 Alpha, a release candidate, is now available to SyncML Supporters in addition to new updates to the SyncML Reference Toolkit which was made available to Supporters in May. Delivered ahead of schedule, the Version 1.0 Alpha Specifications and the updated Reference Toolkit source code will be made available on August 31 in the Supporters area of the SyncML Website located at www.syncml.org.  more...
Nokia signs USD 300 Million GSM expansion contract with SMART in the Philippines August 23, 2000

Nokia has signed an agreement valued at USD 300 million, with SMART Communications, Inc. for the expansion of its nationwide GSM network in the Philippines. The deal sees Nokia remaining the sole-supplier for SMART's advanced mobile network, the companies having worked together since its launch in 1998. 

Nokia will supply and install dual band GSM 900 and GSM 1800 equipment, including mobile switches the revolutionary Nokia UltraSite base stations, which will be ready to support EDGE and WCDMA. Nokia will also supply upgrades for additional General Packet Radio Service capability. This will enable SMART to lay the ground for the introduction of fast Mobile Internet services. 

In support of SMART's aim to position itself at the forefront of the Mobile Internet era, Nokia has already supplied its GPRS core network to SMART, which brings packet data access to Internet content over the mobile network. Nokia's standards compliant GPRS system enables operators to be the first to launch fully commercial GPRS services as existing second Generation networks evolve to 3rd Generation.   more...
Ericsson signs letter of intent with Arima on development and manufacturing of entry-level mobile phones August 2000

Ericsson has signed a letter of intent with the Taiwanese company Arima for development and manufacturing of entry-level mobile phones. The agreement is a part of Ericsson's new entry-level strategy announced in July this year. Arima will be one partner handling development and manufacturing according to Ericsson's specifications of high-volume, value for money mobile phones, so called "entry-level" products, which constitutes a large portion of the total global market. By this outsourcing programme, Ericsson will get access to additional development resources and components, and can allocate its own resources to advanced products for the mobile Internet.   more...
